Hockey + Comics = An Awesome Prize

Alright guys! I have an awesome prize to give away to one lucky reader! This is a prize that is SO AWESOME that I figure I can pretty much make you do anything to win it.

First of all, do you guys know that Darwyn Cooke has been nominated for an Emmy award for The New Frontier (Outstanding animated program for programming one hour or more)? Good luck in L.A., Darwyn!

And on that note, here's the prize I have to give away: A signed copy of Darwyn Cooke's very new, very limited art book. This book was available at this year's Comic Con, and is now only available in select Canadian comic shops. The book is a hardcover retrospective of Cooke's work from 1998 to the present. If you like looking at page after page of stunning art, then you will probably like this book.

This fabulous prize is, as always, courtesy of Strange Adventures Comic Shops.

SO...I figure that since this is a distinctly Canadian prize, and because I am already jealous of whoever wins this because I don't even own a copy of this book, I am going to make y'all do something that will delight and entertain me.

I like two things: comic books and hockey. If you want a shot at winning this book all you have to do is draw a picture of a super hero playing hockey. Then scan it and post it somewhere and link to it in the comment section. Here's a couple of examples to get the creative juices flowing:

Matt (my husband) sketched this at a restaurant while we were waiting for our food:
And here's what I came up with in a hurry:

As you can see by my submission, you don't need to be a great artist to enter this contest. I'm not picking the best drawing. Anyone who makes an honest attempt will be entered into a draw. The winner takes it all.

I'll give it a week or two. Good luck!

  1. Well, you said I didn't have to be a great artist, so here it is:

  5. I can't draw worth a puck, but here is the next best thing, a bunch of
    hockey-related comic covers.

  6. Robert - Awww, does this mean I won't see an entry from you? Colour me disappointed.

  7. It seems like Rob's awesomeness is this omnipresent force in the comics world.

  8. Vy, loved your drawing. It's the one to beat!

Rachelle, not sure if I'll be doing a drawing or not, but if it's okay with you, I'd like to send a copy of my Old-Timey Hockey Tales book to your winner as well!

  9. Awesome contest! I'll have to see what I can come up with...does it matter what team we use or should we stick to the Penguins for Rob's sake? ;)

  12. Rob, I am completely and utterly flattered. Also, I was disappointed by the fact that you didn't make it to the Watchmen discussion in Charlotte! You missed out some mind-blowing stuff!

On the flip side of that, that was one less meal I had to pay for that night.

  13. That's great, Rob! Getting a copy of your hockey comic sweetens the deal considerably! Everybody enter this contest!!

  15. I wanted to go, dangit...I wish I had even more so after seeing the photos...but I just couldn't get away. That's life with a one-year-old, I guess.

  16. One couple actually brought their kid with them, but I guess your wife wouldn't have liked having her child's ears tainted with talk about such vile things.

  17. As an employee of the store, I'm not eligible for the contest, but I wanted to get in on the fun anyway:

  18. Hah! Thanks to the combined wizardry of my teenaged daughter who showed me how to do the links and downloaded it from the scanner, I actually have a finished product!

Please excuse any inaccuracies concerning the hocky sticks. I haven't been to a game since the Whalers left town. *sob*

They're super loose warm ups, but it's the idea that counts!!

  24. These are all so awesome! I can't even tell you how happy this is making me.

Sallyp - that is amazing! It's my new desktop background. Kilowog looks so right playing hockey.

Sea of Green - Kilowog again! And arguing with Guy Gardner! I love it! Those are all so awesome.

Dave - It's true, you are disqualified from the contest, but your entry is awesome. Man I miss Blades of Steel.

Big Dog - Good lord, that is also awesome. Hawkman looks great in a hockey jersey!

Terence - very cool! I take it you're a Canes fan?

Maxime - aw, using spider powers is totally unfair for goalies!

  25. I think there needs to be a story arc on hockey in the Green Lantern Corps.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thanks Rachelle! I hope it's obvious that the second piece is Rorschach busting out an open-goal breakaway slapshot into Doctor Manhattan's pie hole...

I was raised as a blackhawks fan, but i live in Charlotte, NC...so the Canes are basically the home tema!

Is there a deadline for this?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm going to make the deadline a week from today...so Sunday, Sept 21. I'll announce the winner in Sept 22, which is the same day I go to an NHL exhibition game between the Bruins and my beloved Canadiens.
