Scott Pilgrim Contest!

The fifth installment of the beloved Scott Pilgrim series is released today. I haven't read it yet because I don't get advance copies like some bloggers, but I do have a pretty nifty prize to give out!

I have a fairly rare, not-available-in-stores Oni Press collection of miscellaneous Scott Pilgrim stories (see photo). These stories showed up in Free Comic Book Day comics and such and have now been collected in one handy comic book! And it's in FULL COLOUR!

To get your hands on one of these babies, post your ultimate Scott Pilgrim soundtrack playlist in the comment thread. I'll draw a winner randomly from everyone who enters!

"It's a Fact (Painted Stain)" by Matt & Kim

Matt & Kim is music at the speed of Scott Pilgrim.

"Knives Chau Luvs LCD" by Blackball False, Truth!

Kind of a cop out, but it's actually a great song.

"Sore" by Annuals

A slow one, for Kim Pine.

"I Will Posses Your Heart" by Death Cab For Cutie

Scott would probably think this was a clever song on a mix tape for Ramona.

"The Ghost of You Lingers" by Spoon

Envy Adams' song.

"We Are Your Friends" by JUSTICE

Great for right before the fight scene at the end of volume one.

"Nothing to Worry About" by Peter Bjorn and John

Scott would probably like this tune.

"The Big Fight" by Stars

Canadian super-group would describe this band or the characters of Scott Pilgrim.

"Poster of a Girl" by Metric

Winifred Hailey's theme song.

"Umbrella (Cover)" by Tegan and Sara

Scott would think this is really clever and funny and Canadian.

Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) by Arcade Fire: For the beautiful opening which perfectly captures the desolate winter feeling of the first book.

Oliver's Army by Elvis Costello: Cause I would rather be anywhere else but here today. Captures the rootless 20's vibe really well.

Momentum by Aimee Mann: See above.

Deathly by Aimee Mann: While we're here let's add this one for Ramona. "Don't work your stuff/ Because I've got troubles enough"

You Wouldn't Like Me If You Met Me/ Call It Off, by Tegan & Sara: Lisa/Scott, "Maybe I would have been something you'd be good at."

The Ties That Bind by Springsteen: Call it a general theme for Scott and "friends". The characters would probably never listen to Springsteen, but well, I do.

Career Oppurtunity by The Clash: Because this song is the closest I've come to hearing Crash and The Boys. (Music Geek Note: NOT the Sandista kid's choir version)

Say Yes by Eliot Smith: This one speaks for itself.

Fire It Up: Modest Mouse: For some reason this is what I think Sex bobomb's music sound's like (Modest Mouse in general more then this song in specific.) Strangely I also use Modest Mouse as the soundtrack when I'm reading Achewood.

Out On A Weekend: Neil Young: Because every Scott Pilgrim Soundtrack I've ever seen has Neil Young somewhere, and this one fits.

La La Love You: The Pixies: Reason: Goddamn Pixies that's why.

Can someone give me a "If you like x or y you will like Pilgrim" sort of comparison?

"This Year" by The Mountain Goats - Captures that feeling of extended adolescence that pervades the earlier parts of the series, along with a sustained optimism that also resonates.

"I Found Love" by The Free Design - Inescapably poppy without being sappy - just like Scott Pilgrim.

"Night Terrors" by Big Crouton - This is one from the Songfight archives. It basically sounds like epic videogame boss fight music, which makes it perfect for Scott's battles.

"Love Love Love" by The Mountain Goats - Love + Consequences. Also, I'm kind of obsessed with The Mountain Goats right now.

"A View of The City From an Airplane" by Oranger - This has a lot of energy while also being low-key, and in my head it goes with scenes where the gang is just hanging out.

"Ending Theme from The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai" by Michael Boddicker - High energy walking tune.

"Rule of Thump" by Abjure - Another Songfight song, about kicking a dude's ass when he totally deserves it.

"The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts" by Sufjan Stevens - Starts quiet, builds to pumping chorus about how "only a real man can be a lover" before quieting back down again.

"Stake Out" by Freezepop - This is what I imagine Ramona listening to while she skates around, along with:

"Circus he Youkoso" by Hirasawa Susumu - This is from the soundtrack of the film Paprika, and has that same kind of pumping, life-affirming energy.

"Steven's Last Night in Town" by Ben Folds Five - Evokes those late nights sitting around a table at some all-night place.

"Queen Bitch" by David Bowie - Man, I just like this song. And the title describes Julie!

"Rocking the Suburbs" by Ben Folds - Gotta finish out with the big, over-produced rocking finale.

Thanks for the awesome contest idea, Rachelle!

These songs are in an alphabetical order, and are not entirely included for special attention. I 100% think that each of these songs are Scott Pilgrim-y in their own right:

Young Leaves--Attack in Black
Super Soaked--Be Your Own Pet
Little Garcon, Little Fille--Born Ruffians
Hot Tips--The D'urbervilles
Burn 2 Ash-- Chad VanGaalen
Sugar Laced Soul--The Diableros
She Don't Use Jelly--The Flaming Lips
I Know a Place--Jay Reatard
Lay Your Head Down--Keren Ann
Secrets Aren't So Bad--Magneta Land
I'm Easy--The Meligrove Band
Shake It Off--Ninja High School
Bring It--The Stolen Minks
I Want To Be The Boy To Warm Your Mother's Heart--The White Stripes

Thanks! I'm off to eat now. NOM NOM NOM!

j dot - Wow! You really thought this out! And so quickly! I like the heavy amounts of can-con. Well done.

j. hopkins - also very Canadian. I totally agree with I Am the Cancer. I'll always love that song, no matter how ridiculous Sloan gets.

evil dead - Any list with Springsteen is a list that is ok by me!

shawn - Nice start with Art Brut! And I can't tell you how much I love Head Over Heels. I like your combo of indie tracks with mega-hits of the 70s and 80s.

Will - I'll have to check out The Mountain Goats!

Jeffrey - Nice use of Canadian content again. Sharp Like Knives! That's clever! And I like that you have used Absolutely Nothing. Slick.

Desire - I love that Keren Ann song. And thanks for including some Stolen Minks!

Man, you guys are all so hip!

I tried to mix some music that fit thematically with some music that I feel like Scott would hear in his head. Since Scott is in love with 80s/90s culture as me I even put in a couple of songs from movies and tv that I think Scott would hear in some climactic moments.

"20th Century Boy" - The Big Six
"Waiting For Your Letter" - Cary Brothers
"Back To The Future theme" - Alan Silvestri
"Hello City" - Barenaked Ladies
"Heat Of The Moment" - Asia
"I Am The Walrus" - The Beatles
"Superman's Dead" - Our Lady Peace
"Galaxy Song" - Monty Python
"Eye Of The Tiger" - Survivor
"Where Do We Go From Here" - Buffy Cast
"Nobody Does It Better" - Carly Simon
