Here is a letter that was printed in Lois Lane #115 (1975):
Bitch, calm down. First of all, she's a fictional character so any answer to the question "What happened?" is going to sound crazy. And secondly, let's have a look at this allegedly "bulky" and "sometimes even fat" heroine (from Lois Lane #111).
MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Thorn is so fat, she has to iron her clothes in the driveway! When she jumps she gets stuck!
This art was drawn by Gray Morrow and it is BEAUTIFUL. Are you kidding me? She looks totally foxy. She just looks real.
For the record, this is what Thorn usually looked like:

Right on Donna Brown of Portland, Oregon!
Thorn looks so fat she probably has a fully-functional reproductive system. Besides that her breasts aren’t even large enough to give her back problems.
And what’s wrong with her clothes? They gather and wrinkle in places like some sort of crazy “fabric” that isn’t just lines drawn over her naked body. Something has to be done about this!
Man, that letter is probably framed on the wall at DC HQ.
Donna Brown is directly responsible for the newest Supergirl.
I hope Donna Brown reads this post and feels shame.
Well, shoot, now I want to go pick up some issues from the classic Gray Morrow era of Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane.
Oh for...I wish there was more art like this, showing women with actual bodies that function, and breasts that aren't bigger than their heads.
Shees!
Yeah, I know that my girlfriend is always saying stuff like "I wish women looked less realistic in the comics I read".
Well done, Donna Brown. Well done.
"Donna" Brown... yeah, right! This was obviously the nom-de-plume of Donald Brown, who feared the emasculation of being revealed as a reader of Lois Lane comics.
In other news, Thorn has a great ass.
Just sayin'.
These days, Donna Brown probably thinks Beyonce needs liposuction. :-P
She actually does look a little puffy. Maybe she was just retaining water.
I know I'm only seeing a few panels here, but unless they're spread out over a triple-sized comic spectacular, that story doesn't look heavy OR slow-moving. Yeah, that's right -- I'm looking at YOU, ignored-until-now parenthetical aside!
Lois Lane comics always had the best letter-writers. Read and cackle:

Donna Brown, what an incredible female character, I admire this comic so much, it's my favorite one.
Honestly I can't find any difference she looks as usual. I have no complains about her look.
