I am very excited about the new look for Supergirl, as drawn by Renato Guedes. She just looks so...correct.
And she's still sexy, just in a normal proportions kind of way. No more breast implants.
I forgive the kinda gross upskirt sketch because it reveals that she is wearing boy shorts underneath!!! Sensible!!!
If DC is going after the female demographic with this character, I think they are taking steps in the right direction. I would totally hang out with this girl!
The new writer, Tony Bedard, takes over in August with Supergirl #20, and Guedes will be drawing. I can't wait. I am so pleased because I really don't want to hate Supergirl, but outside Brave and the Bold, I have had very little choice.
There's an interview with Bedard at comicon.com with more sketches that you can check out here. Things are looking up!

I love the way she looks. Really I do. I particularly love the long-ish cape, and the way she's folded into it in the middle pics. This version of her looks like a teen who is in a new place, alone, on the outside, trying to fit in. The way her clothes are a little baggy (rather than whore skimpy), her hair almost a little too long for the cut, the boots, gives you the feeling of a girl trying to find her way, trying to define herself.
In any event, she looks *real* and not like a distorted parody of a male wet dream.
Definitely works for me. Glad I added Supergirl to my pull list. Now I don't have to feel like I'm hanging around the book just for the Kryptonian history. LOL
Gosh.
In one of the sitting-down pictures it almost looked like she was wearing a pair of jeans. I was so happy for a second... but I'm almost as happy with the next best thing (Supergirl not resembling a horrible skank).
Wow! She looks so cool, like she actually has substance. This is exciting!
As good as one could hope for, given the previous incarnations.
Actually, on second thought, I'm jaded. That's not bad at all. It's pretty darn good, and better than I would've hoped for. Mind you, I still prefer the JLU cartoon version.. but that's not going to happen.
This is good. I can only hope the writing matches that character design. If it does, I may pick this book up for the first time ever.
I'm with the earlier commenter who said the sitting-down pose looked like she was wearing pants--that would have been cool. But the long cape looks *right* somehow, and oddly adds some gravitas to the uniform. And in general yeah, she looks like a real person wearing a superman top and skirt. I note with joy that the top does not, at this point, look like it's attempting to crawl up and molest her chest (that really freaked me out about the statue).
She looks like someone I'd like to read about. Interesting.
wow, what happened to the super elongated, freaky faced skank creature? looks like DC are hiring people that can actually draw for a change.
See, all they needed to do was model her after Hayden Panettiere, and everything would be OK. Problem solved. This looks really good. Really right. Like a real teenaged girl wearing a costume. Not a cross between Cutie Honey and Julie Strain.
I really love this look with the long cape, and the boy shorts underneath the skirt, and the way her hair looks. It's little too long a little bit messy, as if she doesn't have the time to brush it out.
This is what I consider a pretty teenage girl to look like, especially as a member of the Super-family.
Though, I still maintain pants would look kick ass on that costume. :D
Huge improvement, overall.
Guedes is a damn good artist. The design looks great.
I also happen to think she needs to eat a sandwich and cover up a bit, but then I'm a father. See? How hard was that.
Man, and I love that pose where she is sitting, and to prevent the upskirt, she puts her cape over her lap. That is such a realistic thing to do, it really brings it alive.
Of course, it will be interesting to see what happens with the sales. Peter David's version saw a huge bump when Benes started drawing her...
She actually looks like a real person! I dont even mind the upskirt pose. I think Guedes is trying to show us that he can draw clothes under the skirt, unlike the crotchless panties/thong crap we usually see her in.
I will pick up this issue for sure.
Yeah like one of the other posters said, "wow, what happened to the super elongated, freaky faced skank creature?" If I was pulling her book on a regular basis, she would be so dumped after this stunt!
Just kidding- keep up the great work. You site has now made it into my bookmarks. (How about a thurs. regular enrty "rating the superskanks"- just nonstop bashing and hilarity)?

This is just beautiful art. She's drawn as a living, breathing realistic teenage girl. I...I think that I'll actually do the unthinkable, and BUY a Supergirl comic book!
You know what is mind-boggling? I've already read where some guys think that she's fat and not sexy anymore.
(bangs head onto desk)
Hmm, I'm impressed. She looks a little too old ot be this iteration of Supergirl though, like she's in her early twenties; isn't she supposed to be 17 atm?
I did originally buy Supergirl because of the art style; and I'm a gay man, so the unbelievable-ness of her physique wasn't the reason. I tend to like the more "exagerrated real" art styles.
And hell, Powerboy was just as exagerrated :P.
Mmm. Powerboy.
Now that is what I call a super girl. This style of art is exactly what the series needs. A reboot so to speak. It reminds me of Alex Ross. Not in the sense that it looks like his style, but it makes me like like she's real. I will be putting that on my pull list.
Thanks for the pics and link to the interview.

This is seriously the smartest thing that DC could have done in regard to the Supergirl character. I really never expected such an outstanding redesign. And I feel really good about Bedard as the writer. This could be fantastic. Groundbreaking, even. It's like they are looking at comics like Runaways as reference, which is a really good idea.
I obviously can't say if this will actually attract more female readers to Supergirl, or to comics in general, but it will certainly make a lot of existing female (and male) DC fans happy. Plus, the best way to attract new readers is to re-launch or re-design a character. If the writing and the art is good, people will stay.
Yay, DC!
Squeeeeeeeeeee! XD God, this is awesome. I've been happy dancing ever since I saw this over on Roar of Comics. Just when I didn't think I could love Renato anymore, he had to go and top himself. And thank you so much for posting all these! I'd only saved the first image.
The timing of this couldn't have been better or more surprising--as one of those uber-nerds who costumes for conventions, I'd been stretching the old fashion designing muscles and trying to come up with something interesting and un-skankalicious for a Supergirl uniform. I'd basically though, "If I were Supergirl, what would I wear...?" Then this plops down in my lap. You still can't pay me to bare my midriff, but it's so heartening to see her wearing actual boots! Not skin-tight socks! And a decently-long-yet-still-playful skirt!
But now I want that big honking cape, LOL. :p
i blogged about this, too! i am so excited for this to come out. it fills me with hope for the future of comics.
I've enjoyed Renato Guides'art ever since he started filling in on Rucka's Adventures of Superman. His work has a "Tony Harris meets Pete Woods" look to it. This could be the breakout book for him.
As long as Bedard can give her some interesting storylines to go with the great art, we may have a winner on our hands.
Heck, I'm just surprised by the healthy amount of responsibility DC took here. You NEVER see a mainstream comic company do *that* anymore!
(Also, this comes out at a pretty interesting time, as Marvel has the Jane statue and the HFH #13 cover, and denies that either are sexist.

Thank Jaysus, a version of Supergirl that I would actually show a woman. Most of the renditions of her (save the Waid-Kitson Legion version) have been "hide from company" bad.
I almost wish that supergirl would start over with a new #1 and have a fresh start.
No offense to anyone involved in the current volume, but it's been a misfire for me. It's a character I WANT to like....but so far, nada
Her face makes her seem more likeable and intelligent, and this will no doubt attract more female readers like DC have been wanting all along. However, I don't think Supergirl would have the figure of an average teenager, I don't want her to look elongated and anorexic either, but Kara is hardly a normal girl. Kryptonians should have muscle, what would be wrong with her having a perfectly healthy athletic figure like Ms Marvel for instance? I don't get it.
Supergirl is a fictional character about a fake alien race doing things which never existed, so she should look however the audience is most comfortable with her looking.
Besides, unlike Ms. Marvel, she needs no super muscles! Bah!
"Supergirl is a fictional character about a fake alien race doing things which never existed" Then why would she look like a normal human? Out of all the DC superheroines with toned, nimble figures why would Supergirl of all people look this way?
"unlike Ms. Marvel, she needs no super muscles"
So I guess they should make Superman look normal as well as Powergirl and countless other super strong alien comic characters, but then that would really suck.
Give this new version a bit of muscle, that's all I'm saying.
I like her hair.
It looks like she's been flying.
The final orders for Supergirl #20 are due this week. I bumped our orders on it to 300 for Halifax and 100 for Fredericton. We'll be giving them away free in the hopes that the new creative team Supergirl will be off to a flying start!
It looks as though Guedes is off the book and yet another team will be taking over. Drew Johnson will be handling the art duty with yet again another costume revamp/redo. *sigh* I would like this title to have more stability. It's hard to get into a book when there's constant shaking up of the creative team.
This is the most lifelike superheroine since...
Gee, since Kurt Schaffenberger's Supergirl, with the unapologetic tummy roll.
...So, am I the only one who thinks she looks ugly, or do people think that realistic equals ugly?
Then again, there are some really immature feminists who think drawing female characters attractive is sexist (even thought most male superheroes are drawn attractive, too), so if DC wants them to read Supergirl, then I guess it is a smart move.
"So I guess they should make Superman look normal as well as Powergirl and countless other super strong alien comic characters, but then that would really suck.
Give this new version a bit of muscle, that's all I'm saying."
Supergirl ISN'T Superman or Powergirl. Like it or not, she always was was supposed to look "cute". Otherwise, she wouldn't be dressed like that. Giving her muscles would go against the concept of the character. It would be like giving Robin muscles (and yes, sometimes Robin is drawn with muscles, but it never looks right to me). Then again, by your logic, I guess you must think Robin should have muscles just because Batman has them.
This is the way it should have gone in the first place. It seems more real, and not so artificial like the previous one, this was looks born like this not made in at the OR
Is the new super girl a lesbian? I heard a rumor about it!
